If you’re suffering from a herniated or bulging disc, or you’re experiencing degenerative disc disease that’s causing excruciating pain, you’re most likely searching for effective treatment. At Colorado Spine Institute (CSI) in Loveland, we want to provide each patient with the treatment they need so they can experience relief from the pain induced by their spinal condition. One treatment option we offer is stem cell therapy through bone marrow aspiration. We know that you may have questions or concerns about stem cell treatment, and in this blog, we want to explain our process and how the cells can benefit your body.

Cells are Gathered from Your Own Body

One of the first questions we often get regarding stem cells is, “Where do the cells come from?” We always take multipotent cells from the patient’s own body, as there are still many concerns and federal regulations surrounding donor stem cells. It’s also a more effective and efficient way to gather cells and make sure they’ll be compatible with your immune system.

The cells are taken from the patient’s bone marrow, usually from the pelvic bone, as this area is a rich reservoir of multipotent cells. The body will regenerate these cells rather quickly, and the ones that are withdrawn will then be concentrated and injected into the injured site – in this case, the affected area of the spine. The cells will then begin helping the body repair itself from within, and could cut down on pain levels and the time needed to recover from a spinal injury.

What Type of Stem Cells are Used?

Another question we’ve heard is, “What types of stem cells are used?” There are three main types of adult stem cells – mesenchymal, hematopoietic, and endothelial cells. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the cells found in bone marrow, and research has shown that MSCs can differentiate into fat, bone, and cartilage cells. That makes them beneficial for spinal treatment, since they will turn into the cells necessary for healing. We can answer all of your questions regarding MSCs and how they can benefit your body.

Why Stem Cells?

This is another popular question, and the answer can be quite complex. While traditional treatments can help with certain spinal conditions, the research being done and the breakthroughs being performed with stem cells continue to change how medicine is used to heal the spine. We want to give every patient the best chance at a full, healthy life that’s free from chronic back pain and limited mobility.
